Senior Backend Engineer – Payments

About the role

We are an international broker with roughly 60 payment methods across Asia, Africa, LATAM and the Middle East. Payments is now a standalone function and we are building a dedicated team. We need a Senior Backend Engineer to own the connector layer and everything downstream, creating a canonical adapter layer and moving payment flows to server‑to‑server and embedded models.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build and own the connector and adapter layer so new providers are added via configuration and thin adapters.
• Migrate payment methods from redirect to server‑to‑server and embedded flows, measuring impact.
• Own downstream processes: reconciliation, transaction status handling, method configuration and client‑portal flows.
• Ensure end‑to‑end reliable transaction status through active polling, idempotent processing and reconciliation.
• Build observability for transaction status and provider performance across the estate.
• Specify and review the behaviour required from the orchestration platform (state machine, idempotency, routing, etc.).
• Support integration work for the card programme and extend the integration set to acquired entities.

Required profile

• 5+ years of backend engineering experience, strong in TypeScript and Node.js.
• Production experience with payment systems (authorisation, callbacks, refunds, reconciliation, retry logic).
• Deep understanding of idempotency, asynchronous status handling and transaction state machines.
• Experience integrating third‑party APIs of varying quality and working directly with provider teams.
• Ability to own a service end‑to‑end, making architecture decisions and fixing root causes.
• Working communicative level in English and Russian.
