Project Mechanical Engineer – Federal Engineering and Design

About the role

Olsson is looking for a Project Mechanical Engineer to lead mechanical system design on federal infrastructure projects such as VA hospitals, DoD facilities and other government buildings. You will work within a multidisciplinary team to deliver efficient, sustainable and code‑compliant solutions from concept through construction.

Key responsibilities

• Lead design of HVAC, plumbing and medical‑gas systems for federal, healthcare and institutional facilities.
• Prepare detailed engineering documents, cost estimates and design calculations.
• Ensure designs comply with VA standards, UFC, IBC, ASHRAE, NFPA and other applicable codes.
• Coordinate with architects, other engineering disciplines and federal stakeholders to integrate mechanical systems.
• Manage project schedules, budgets and deliverables.
• Conduct internal design reviews and quality‑control processes.
• Participate in client meetings, site visits and stakeholder presentations.
• Support business development by contributing to proposals and RFP responses.
• Mentor junior engineers and foster a collaborative team environment.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license.
• Minimum 6 years of mechanical design experience, preferably on VA, DoD or healthcare facilities.
• Strong communication skills and ability to manage multiple projects in a fast‑paced environment.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Revit.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD.
• Experience with HVAC design software.
• Knowledge of VA design standards, UFC, IBC, ASHRAE and NFPA codes.
